Washington University Libraries adds Frank Marshall Davis Collection

Interview, photographs, news clippings of famous African-American poet and journalist preserved

October 8, 2009

Washington University Libraries' Film & Media Archive has partnered with the University of Hawaii-West Oahu to preserve and digitize an interview with African-American poet and journalist Frank Marshall Davis. Also preserved were photographs, news clippings and poetry readings by Davis, which along with the interview make up the Frank Marshall Davis Collection, a new addition to the holdings of the Film & Media Archive.

Davis published several books of poetry in the 1930s and '40s. Despite being based in Chicago and the Midwest, he was considered to be a part of the Harlem Renaissance along with prominent authors such as Langston Hughes. Davis also was a journalist and headed the American Negro Press. He moved to Hawaii in 1949. In Hawaii, Davis wrote a weekly column, "Frankly Speaking," in the labor-oriented Honolulu Record newspaper.

The newly digitized interview with Davis was conducted in 1987 by Hawaii's Center for Labor Education and Research (CLEAR) as part of a planned long-form documentary about Davis. Davis died before the program was completed. A shorter, 30-minute program was created as a tribute to Davis and aired on Hawaii Public Television.

Davis is mentioned in President Barack Obama's book "Dreams from My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance" as a drinking buddy of his grandfather and an African-American that made an impression on Obama as a young man growing up in Hawaii.

CLEAR has transferred all the Frank Marshall Davis materials to Washington University's Film & Media Archive, where they complement existing holdings on civil rights, labor, democracy and 20th-century African-American artists.

The Frank Marshall Davis Collection is fully searchable in the Film & Media Archive catalog. Clips from Davis' interview can be viewed online at library.wustl.edu/units/spec/filmandmedia.

U.S. Marines to Get Flying Car as Logi AeroSpace Proposes "IED Proof" Vehicle Called Tyrannos to DARPA

First, it was the Terrafugia Transition® flying car. Now, it's the Tyrannos flying car - which is allegedly going to be for the U.S. Marines.

###

logi AeroSpace Proposes “IED Proof” Vehicle to DoD

BELLEVUE, Nebraska (July 1, 2010) - logi AeroSpace, working with several other innovative companies, is leading the way in advanced transportation with a proposal to the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) for the Tyrannos, a new concept vehicle based on proven technologies.

Designed for protection of military troops, the Tyrannos can travel both on and above roads to speed transportation between locations. The Tyrannos was inspired by the hundreds of US military troops who have lost their lives to IEDs while driving on roads in Iraq and Afghanistan. Using a flight-proven shrouded propeller design from Trek Aerospace, it’s designed to drive in the air above roads to avoid IED explosions. This vehicle also drives on the ground in all terrains from mountainous to city streets and can take off vertically without a runway. For non-military uses, the vehicle will transform modern lifestyles. Travel limited by terrain or time will no longer exist. Living in the country while working in the city becomes a viable option. Imagine the Poconos to New York City in 20 minutes or Santa Barbara to LA in 35 minutes.

To put this design into effect, logi AeroSpace is tapping the experience and expertise of electric vehicle pioneer ZAP (www.zapworld.com) for its advanced technology and knowledge in electric drive trains for road vehicles. Trek Aerospace (http://www.trekaero.com/) will implement its shrouded propeller technology.

The Tyrannos is a bold, new and exciting vehicle that has been designed like no other car; it can drive along highways at 60 mph or climb vertically from a driveway and travel at 155 mph in the sky. This eco friendly AT-TV (Airborne and Terrain Transport Vehicle) comfortably seats four, and can operate at zero emissions both on the ground and in the air. On the ground it can travel 46 miles in the all-electric mode and will get 43 miles per gallon on the road or obtain an astounding 19.4 air miles per gallon when flying.

The strategic advantage in Tyrannos is its super computer designed shrouded propellers and its advanced guidance system. Larry Ortega, the inventor of the guidance system and an Air Force Test Pilot School Flight Test Engineer Graduate says: “The aerospace industry has been flyingaircraft as airborne simulators of other aircraft to train pilots in the air for decades. This airborne simulator simulates a car. Any person who can drive on a street can drive it. We’ll project a freeway in the sky on the windshield for the driver to see so they can get comfortable with the environment. It will be like crossing a high bridge.”

UCSB Scientists Discover How the Brain Encodes Memories at a Cellular Level

My alma mater - UC Santa Barbara. I love that school and cherish my times there in the mid-1990s. Some of my best memories come from that place. While UCSB has always been a stellar school, it has certain renegade-like tendencies that tend to separate it from other top-level schools. It is a huge party school right on the beach with a ghetto of students living in the densely-packed community of Isla Vista which is adjacent to the campus. The students burned the Bank of America down in the early 1970s. In addition to producing me as an alum, the school also produced Jack Johnson, Michael Douglas, Benjamin Bratt, Jim Rome and Brian Shaw.

Current UCSB scientists may surpass all of those notable alums mentioned above with this recent discovery. Check out the official press release below.

(Santa Barbara, Calif.) –– Scientists at UC Santa Barbara have made a major discovery in how the brain encodes memories. The finding, published in the December 24 issue of the journal Neuron, could eventually lead to the development of new drugs to aid memory.

The team of scientists is the first to uncover a central process in encoding memories that occurs at the level of the synapse, where neurons connect with each other.

"When we learn new things, when we store memories, there are a number of things that have to happen," said senior author Kenneth S. Kosik, co-director and Harriman Chair in Neuroscience Research, at UCSB's Neuroscience Research Institute. Kosik is a leading researcher in the area of Alzheimer's disease.

"One of the most important processes is that the synapses –– which cement those memories into place –– have to be strengthened," said Kosik. "In strengthening a synapse you build a connection, and certain synapses are encoding a memory. Those synapses have to be strengthened so that memory is in place and stays there. Strengthening synapses is a very important part of learning. What we have found appears to be one part of how that happens."

Part of strengthening a synapse involves making new proteins. Those proteins build the synapse and make it stronger. Just like with exercise, when new proteins must build up muscle mass, synapses must also make more protein when recording memories. In this research, the regulation and control of that process was uncovered.

The production of new proteins can only occur when the RNA that will make the required proteins is turned on. Until then, the RNA is "locked up" by a silencing molecule, which is a micro RNA. The RNA and micro RNA are part of a package that includes several other proteins.

"When something comes into your brain –– a thought, some sort of stimulus, you see something interesting, you hear some music –– synapses get activated," said Kosik. "What happens next is really interesting, but to follow the pathway our experiments moved to cultured neurons. When synapses got activated, one of the proteins wrapped around that silencing complex gets degraded."

When the signal comes in, the wrapping protein degrades or gets fragmented. Then the RNA is suddenly free to synthesize a new protein.

"One reason why this is interesting is that scientists have been perplexed for some time as to why, when synapses are strengthened, you need to have proteins degrade and also make new proteins," said Kosik. "You have the degradation of proteins going on side by side with the synthesis of new proteins. So we have now resolved this paradox. We show that protein degradation and synthesis go hand in hand. The degradation permits the synthesis to occur. That's the elegant scientific finding that comes out of this."

The scientists were able to see some of the specific proteins that are involved in synthesis. Two of these –– CaM Kinase and Lypla –– are identified in the paper.

One of the approaches used by the scientists in the experiment was to take live neuron cells from rats and look at them under a high-resolution microscope. The team was able to see the synapses and the places where proteins are being made.

The first author on the paper is Sourav Banerjee, a postdoctoral fellow with the Neuroscience Research Institute and the Department of Cellular, Molecular, and Developmental Biology. The other author is Pierre Neveu, who is affiliated with the Neuroscience Research Institute and the Kavli Institute of Theoretical Physics.

Milorad "Rod" Blagojevich Curses President Obama on Tape About Illinois Senate Seat

Wells-Fargo Asset Wachovia Reportedly Helped Mexican Drug Smugglers Launder $378.4B in Narcotics Money in Violation of Bank Secrecy Act

In order for the illegal drug game to be profitable, all pieces of the distribution chain must be available and in play just as in a legal business. In any distribution system, there must be a financing mechanism to ensure there is a place to hold the business' income and profits. A bank is a critical piece in any distribution chain, even in the illegal drug game. If there is money to be made, the bankers want a piece of the action and there is a lot of money in the illegal drug game.

Therefore, it is no wonder that
Wachovia recently admitted its part handling $378.4 billion in illicit narcotics funds in violation of the Bank Secrecy Act in the mid 2000s.

This was no isolated incident. Wachovia, it turns out, had made a habit of helping move money for Mexican drug smugglers. Wells Fargo & Co., which bought Wachovia in 2008, has admitted in court that its unit failed to monitor and report suspected money laundering by narcotics traffickers...

Wachovia admitted it didn’t do enough to spot illicit funds in handling $378.4 billion for Mexican-currency-exchange houses from 2004 to 2007.

U.S. Government to Burn 40 Million Doses of Expired Swine Flu Vaccine as Sebelius' H1N1 Pandemic Sham Costs Taxpayers $260 Million

HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius

Thank you Madame Secretary for all the fear and paranoia. Only fear and paranoia would cause a government to buy millions of doses of a toxic H1N1 "swine flu" vaccine that no one wanted and that must now be incinerated. That's $260 million literally up in smoke for a false pandemic.

What is the name of the person who was responsible for ordering so many doses of the H1N1 vaccine that are now wasted? Unless that person is identified, then the buck stops with Kathleen Sebelius. She is responsible for a $260 million waste, because she continually promoted the vaccine like the H1N1 "swine flu" was the end of the world instead of it being nothing more than a mild flu.

About a quarter of the swine flu vaccine produced for the U.S. public has expired -- meaning that a whopping 40 million doses worth about $260 million is being written off as trash.

"It's a lot, by historical standards," said Jerry Weir, who oversees vaccine research and review for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Pennsylvania Police Departments Will Be Able to Wirelessly Monitor Franklin Regional School District Bathroom Cameras Live in Realtime from Laptops

I know that some people are happy that kids and teenagers do not have any right to privacy in public schools, but I am not one of those people. I believe that students should have an expectation of privacy in school, but unfortunately, they do not. These new live cameras in the Franklin Regional School District (Pennsylvania) with real time police monitoring capacity end any privacy rights that still exist in the schools.

About 128 cameras keep watch over the Franklin Regional School District's five schools - one high school, one middle school and three elementary schools. And the Murrysville Police Department will upgrade officers' in-car laptops with software that will connect to each of the district's live video feeds. Linking to these feeds could provide vital information for police officers in the event of an emergency...

When the software is installed, police officers can log on through their laptops, most likely via a virtual private network (VPN), to access the software hosted from the school district's server. The software will provide a live feed from the schools' cameras, and also can load other information, like electronic floor plans to help police officers identify points of interest, such as stairwells and bathrooms.

Let's hope that this police force does not have officers who will use these live bathroom camera feeds for unauthorized purposes.

Yong Xiang Xan Convicted of Honey-Laundering (Sending Cheap Chinese Honey to Philippines for Relabeling to Avoid U.S. Import Taxes)

File Photo

I have always said that I want to learn something new every day. On July 1, 2010, I learned about the practice of honey-laundering. I am surprised that it has taken me this long to hear about it, because the practice seems fairly simple.

Anyway, here's the story that brought me this new knowledge. A Chinese businessman named Yong Xiang Xan was sending its containers of cheap honey to the Philippines for relabeling and shipping to the United States. The criminal action in United States District Court can be read at:
U.S. vs. Yong Xiang Yan (a/k/a "Nonstop Smoker," a/k/a "NSS"). Here's Mr. Yong Xiang Yan's plea agreement.

A Chinese businessman has been convicted of trying to get around U.S. import taxes by sending 15 shipping containers of cut-rate honey to the Philippines to be relabeled and sent on to the United States.

DHH Reopens Oyster Harvesting Areas 27 and 28

No Intrusion of Oil Reported; Reopening Allows Harvesters Additional Time to Gather Oysters

BATON ROUGE - The Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals announced today that it is reopening oyster harvesting areas 27 and 28 to give harvesters as much time as possible to harvest their product before any potential impact from the BP oil spill in the Gulf.

Areas 27 and 28, which are west of the Mississippi River in Iberia Parish, were originally closed June 9 and May 26 respectively, as a precaution in anticipation of possible oil intrusion. There has been no intrusion as of yet in either area being opened. DHH officials continue to monitor the areas and have worked with the Food and Drug Administration and within federal protocols to facilitate the partial reopening.

In addition to continued lab testing being conducted by the state, oyster harvesters "taste test" the oysters as they are pulled from the water to make sure their product is not contaminated.

DHH Secretary Alan Levine and State Health Officer Dr. Jimmy Guidry signed the order today to reopen areas 27 and 28, which will take effect at sunrise June 30.

DHH officials have been working closely with local, state and federal agencies to monitor the oil plume that continues to grow off of the Louisiana coastline for its potential impacts on oyster harvesting areas.

In addition to regular testing schedules, DHH scientists and engineers are conducting enhanced testing of oyster meat taken from the closed beds to monitor the presence of oil. Oysters being harvested in areas open for harvesting have been deemed safe by DHH.

Areas 8, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 29 and 30 remain closed. Areas 2, 3, 9 and 10 are partially closed. All other areas are open.

The public is encouraged to call a toll-free hotline, 1-800-256-2775, to report the presence of oil or an oil sheen.

Twenty-One (21) Suspected Mexican Gang Members Reportedly Killed in Border Shootout in Sonora

Coincidentally or not, this border shootout between suspected Mexican gangs happens on the very same day that President Obama gives an impassioned speech on immigration. Mr. Rahm doesn't believe in letting a crisis go to waste, so I bet you will hear the government and the Attorney General spin this event for its purposes.

A clash between suspected members of rival Mexican drug gangs in a rural area near the US border has left 21 people dead, officials say.

The shootout on Thursday involved "two groups of suspected drug traffickers and undocumented" migrants, the Sonora state attorney general's office said in a statement.

Sarah Palin's Husband Todd Worked for BP as an Oil Production Operator on Alaska's North Slope

Does everyone have a connection to BP? BP financed Rahm Emanuel's DC living quarters. BP gave more money in 2008 to Barack Obama than anyone else. President Obama's father allegedly worked for BP. And now I learn that Mr. Sarah Palin also worked for BP. Wow! I wonder what Sarah is saying about BP out on the stump these days.

Mr. Palin, in addition to being a champion snowmobile racer, is an oil production operator on the North Slope, working for BP, a company that has had to make major repairs since a spill on the slope temporarily shut down production there in 2006.

In addition to Ms. Palin’s $125,000 state salary, Mr. Palin earned $93,000 last year running his own commercial fishing business and working part-time at BP’s oil production facility, according to her public financial disclosure reports.

Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Says H1N1 "Swine Flu" Pandemic Emergency Is Over

So after billions of wasted taxpayer dollars and paranoia, the government finally realizes that the H1N1 "swine flu" was a dud. I wrote a lot about the H1N1 in 2009 and those topics put this blog on the map. Now, the Health & Human Services reportedly says the H1N1 pandemic emergency is over. By the way, has anyone seen Sebelius lately, because she has been missing in action over the last few weeks?

Federal officials today allowed the public health emergency declaration that was prompted by the H1N1 influenza outbreak last year to lapse, signaling an end to emergency authorizations for certain special uses of antiviral drugs and other items.

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) first declared the emergency Apr 26, 2009, and has renewed it quarterly since then, the last time on Mar 26. "The current March 26 determination is scheduled to expire on June 23, and, based on the current circumstances, will not be renewed," says a statement released by an HHS official today.

Washington State Department of Ecology Conducts Oil Spill Response Drill Near Kalama on Columbia River

Video from May 5, 2010 at Richland

###

Department of Ecology News Release - June 25, 2010

Drill event near Kalama to test response to spill on Columbia River

OLYMPIA ─ If you are in the Kalama area on June 29, 2010, and see a flurry of activity on the Columbia River, there should be no cause for alarm.

Private spill response boats and recovery vessels will be deploying oil boom barriers and tracking buoys and other gear in a test of their ability to quickly deploy equipment in the event of an actual oil spill.

No oil will be used for next Tuesday’s exercise.

The Washington Department of Ecology (Ecology) will test how well several state-regulated companies can implement their oil spill preparedness plans, including coordinating actions and quickly mobilizing equipment to effectively respond to an oil spill.

This planned drill is being conducted by the Marine Spill Response Corp., a private, non-profit contractor providing oil-spill response services for 20 companies in Washington.

Drill participants include the barge-towing operation Harley Marine Services Inc. of Seattle and oil shipping companies Polar Tankers Inc., SeaRiver Maritime Inc., and Alaska Tanker Co.

All of these companies operate on the Columbia River and maintain mandatory oil-spill contingency plans that spell out how they will respond to oil spills, using geographic-based response plans that are tailored to help reduce adverse effects on sensitive natural, cultural and economic resources in an area.

The Columbia River is a particularly challenging location for the exercise. Shifting sediments can make navigation tricky and participants may have to work in swiftly moving water. Oil tankers, fuel barges, and large cargo vessels make more than 2,300 transits a year in the Columbia River.

A major oil spill on this waterway would have catastrophic impacts. For that reason, it is essential that the companies responsible for carrying millions of gallons of oil onto this river system are prepared to mount a rapid, aggressive, well coordinated response.

U.S. Government Lifts City Ban on Trucks Carrying Hazardous Materials in Downtown Boston During Daytime Hours

Why, why, why? There is no reason hazardous materials should be rolling through downtown Boston during the daytime hours when it is at maximum capacity. That is ridiculous!

The U.S. government will lift a city ban on trucks carrying hazardous materials downtown during the daytime, starting later this week.

But under a gentleman’s agreement between the city and a trade group, the truckers will limit their use to Cross Street, instead of the heavily residential Commercial Street in the North End.

A gentleman's agreement? Is the government seriously discussing gentleman's agreements in 2010? That is equally ridiculous, because now the hazardous materials ban is lifted, it will be easier for terrorists, operatives or other evil doers to transport hazardous materials into the city during peak times. And that is not a good thing. Remixx World! previously reported in August, 2009 that Boston could be a false flag target (Is the Globalist N.W.O. Setting Up Boston for a False Flag Terrorist?). Let's hope I'm wrong.

Why, you may ask? It mainly relates to the various connections between Boston, PTech, 9/11, Special Agent Warren Bamford and Mayor Tom Menino.

1. PTech was based in Boston. PTech was founded by persons with connections to Al-Qaeda, and the company's software gave it back doors to override government computers and systems. These back doors could have been used to make NORAD and the FAA stand down on 9/11 as has been alleged by Indira Singh and Michael Ruppert in "Crossing the Rubicon."

2. There was a big arrest of PTech executives by the F.B.I. in July, 2009 that received NO COVERAGE from the mainstream media aside from The Boston Herald. It was the first real mention of PTech since around 2002 and one of the first biggest arrests to date of a real 9/11 terrorist. The current article is archived by The Boston Herald, but here is the FBI press release relating to this arrest.

3. Now, Warren Bamford, the F.B.I. agent in charge of the recent PTech arrest, is saying that Boston police need to be armed with semi-automatic assault rifles to protect against a possible terrorist attack similar to the recent Mumbai terrorist attacks. However, Mayor Tom Menino is against the proposal.

Why would Special Agent Bamford issue such a warning? Does he know something that we do not know? Could he be trying to warn Boston about a possible false flag terrorist attack similar to how FBI agents tried to warn people prior to 9/11?.

Excess Titanium from NNSA’s Y-12 Plant To Be Used by U.S. Army for New Generation of Protective Body Armor for Combat Troops

The Internet makes it quite easy to find press releases. During my university days as a media relations intern, I remember how difficult it was to get press release coverage before the Internet age. I had to use the fax and phone back in the day to get placement, but now, one only has to put up a website with the most recent releases. Without the Internet, I doubt if I would have ever found a press release like the one below.
