"Hotel Minibar" Keys Open Diebold Voting Machines

This whole electronic voting stuff is starting to get very scary and at the same time -- quite ridiculous. Apparently, the Diebold voting machines can be opened with a key that can easily be bought online.

That fact does not give me a lot of confidence in the voting process. Why can't these machines issue paper receipts/ballots which can be verified against the computer tabulations? That way if there are issues with the computer reports, these paper receipts could be counted to ensure accuracy. It does not make sense to me unless the powers-that-be do not want to include a way to verify the votes.

SENATOR ROBERT BYRD'S FLOOR REMARKS FROM THE U.S. SENATE

I Hope That We May Find the Courage...
http://informationclearinghouse.info/article14977.htm

By Senator Robert C. Byrd
US Senate Floor Remarks

09/13/06 "Information Clearing House" -- --

Mr. President,

September 11 has come and gone, and as we remember those lost on that fateful day, and contemplate events since the horrific attack, one truth stands out.

The war in Iraq has backfired, producing more recruits for terrorism, and deep divisions within our own country. It is a war we should never have begun. The detour from our attack on Bin Laden and his minions, hiding in the cracks and crevices of the rough terrain of Afghanistan, to the unwise and unprovoked attack on Iraq has been a disastrous one. Mr. Bush’s war has damaged the country because he drove our blessed land into an unnecessary conflict, utterly misreading the consequences, with the result now being a daily display of America’s vulnerabilities to those who wish us ill. The United States is a weaker power now, especially in the Middle East, but also in the court of world opinion. Where is the America of restraint, of peace and of inspiration to millions? Where is the America respected not only for her military might, but also for her powerful ideas and her reasonable diplomacy?

Our country may have deviated occasionally from its positive global image in the past, but Abu Ghraib, the body snatching for torture, euphemistically called rendition, Presidential directives which unilaterally alter conditions of the Geneva Convention -- these are not the stuff of mere slight deviations from the America of peacefulness, fairness, and goodwill. These are major policy and attitudinal changes of Tsunami-sized proportions. Our friends shake their heads in disbelief. Our enemies nod wisely and claim they knew all the while. I cannot remember a time in our history when our elected leaders have failed the people so completely, and yet, so far, are not held accountable for costly misjudgments and outright deceptions.

Take our Secretary of Defense, Donald Rumsfeld, for example. He misread the Iraqi situation entirely. He adamantly dismisses suggestions for a larger force in Iraq. He failed to object when the White House’s Coalition Provisional Authority disbanded the Iraqi army, only to have them go underground and provide fodder for the insurgency. He insisted that the Iraqi people would view our soldiers as liberators not occupiers, and even failed to properly anticipate the equipment needs of our men and women in harm’s way.

Secretary Rumsfeld continues to insist that we are not facing a civil war in Iraq despite convincing evidence to the contrary, and yet he sits comfortably in his office as the echo of his errors in judgment and strategy continues to cost thousands of lives.

Then there is President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney. These men continue to try to make the American public swallow whole the line that the war in Iraq is the front line of a global war on terror, which must be continued at all costs. Stay the course, they say, despite three years of discouragingly little progress in Iraq. The body count is approaching 2,700 for our side, tens of thousands for the beleaguered Iraqi people, and billions of American tax dollars, of which an embarrassingly large chunk has been wasted by irresponsible contractors, and government officials who lack the proper respect for the public purse. Many of our allies have left the field, recognizing the truth that the Administration fails to see: namely, we had the weapons to win the war, but not the wisdom to secure the peace.

Yet, too many in the public are complacent about the numerous violations of their trust and the continuing loss of life in Iraq. Some of our citizens have apparently been convinced that it is unpatriotic to criticize one’s country when that country is engaged in an armed conflict. In fact, in our land today, there is a troubling tolerance for government overreaching on fronts at home as well as abroad. This Administration has repeatedly used fear and flag-waving to blunt the traditional American insistence on the Bill of Rights, personal freedom of thought and action, privacy, and one’s right to speak and write as one pleases. Such a cynical exercise on the part of high officials of our government is unconscionable. It is shameful behavior for which there is no excuse.

The Congress, under the control of the President’s party has been submissive, a lap dog wagging its tail in appreciation of White House secrecy and deception. Even the vast majority of the opposition party has been too quiet for too long -- unable to find its voice, stunted by the demand to “support the troops.” We forget, too often, that there is a very real difference between support for the troops and support for an unnecessary war. The men and women of our military did not ask to go to those faraway places, but they were willing. They answered their country’s call. We have an obligation to support them, but we do not need to follow blindly the unthinking policies that keep them mired in the middle of a civil war.

The American public is our last best hope now. Our people must demand more from their representatives in the Congress and from their leaders in the White House. Donald Rumsfeld should be replaced by the President because he has made so many grievous errors in judgement on Iraq and because a new voice at the helm of the Department of Defense could be a breath of fresh air for our policies in Iraq. His replacement would be good for our country. Yet even a sense of the Senate vote of “no confidence” in Mr. Rumsfeld’s leadership has been blocked by the President’s party in the Senate. Personal accountability has been long absent from this Administration, and this Senator would like to see it return.

One would hope that men and women who rise to positions of awesome responsibility would have the grace, dignity, and honor to know in their own hearts when a well-timed resignation would advance patriotic goals. But, too often, the selfish love of power or some misguided show of toughness wins the days to the detriment of our country’s fortunes. Donald Rumsfeld ought to step down or his President ought to ask him to. There is too much at stake for any other course. Personally, I believe the President is derelict in his duties when he does not ask for Mr. Rumsfeld’s latchkey. The bungling and loss of life attendant to this tragic three-year long debacle in Iraq have hurt this country, its public image, and its ability to achieve numerous other national and international goals. That kind of dangerous ineptitude cannot be excused.

But like so many things when it comes to Iraq and the Middle East in general, the United States of America is stuck in neutral, with the only thing showing vigorous movement the ever spiraling price of gasoline. We have destabilized the Middle East, and handed the mullahs a way to affect the daily lives and livelihood of every American, and the efficacy of our military might -- the oil supply lines upon which our economy and our military depend.

Now that oil supply is a favorite target for terrorists who have learned the joys of bombing pipelines, and listening to America bite its nails about the high cost of gasoline, while it laments its lack of foresight in developing alternative fuels.

Now, we have passed yet another anniversary of the bloody attacks which precipitated the disastrous situation in which our country finds itself today. Yet, while we mourn, there are hard truths to confront.

Our attention has been shifted, by design and deception, too quickly from the war in Afghanistan -- a war that we needed to fight and win. Now the Taliban is on the rise in that country. Al Qaeda continues to find sanctuary in the mountains. Violence is on the rise, and peace and stability are in jeopardy.

North Korea, probably reacting to our doctrine of preemption and our newfound bellicosity, has increased its nuclear capability. Iran has been emboldened by our inability to stop the violence in Iraq, and by the lukewarm support we have garnered from traditional allies. Even the people of Turkey, one of the United States’ staunchest allies with Turkey a member of NATO, and a model of secular Muslim democracy, have turned against us. A survey conducted by the German Marshall Fund of the United States indicates that Iran has become one of the most popular countries in Turkey, and that there is a growing willingness to identify with radical Islam. A display of ineptitude and spectacular miscalculation in Iraq has cost us dearly. Disenchantment at home with the dismal results in Iraq will have reverberations for years, much like the failure in Vietnam did in the 1960's.

President Bush insists that his war must go on. He defends warrantless wiretapping of our own citizens as essential to his cause, despite a court decision that the President has no such authority under our Constitution. He defends torture and rendition, and says that they have produced valuable evidence which has subverted several terror attacks on our country. But, his credibility is so damaged that it is difficult to believe him. He demands the authority to hold terror suspects indefinitely, and then to try them using military tribunals which deny basic rights, also in defiance of a Supreme Court ruling. He seems convinced that he can “win” a global war on terror despite the demonstrated failure of his policies of unilateralism, militarism, overheated rhetoric, and a pathological dislike of diplomacy. It is up to the Congress to change course and to stop the heinous raiding of constitutionally protected liberties by a White House which does not fully appreciate the true meaning of the word freedom. I hope that we may find the courage.

Extraordinary Rendition, Torture and Disappearances in the "War on Terror" -- OUTLAWED (VIDEO)

Extraordinary Rendition, Torture and Disappearances in the "War on Terror"

Human rights groups and several public inquiries in Europe have found the U.S. government, with the complicity of numerous governments worldwide, to be engaged in the illegal practice of extraordinary rendition, secret detention, and torture. The U.S. government-sponsored program of renditions is an unlawful practice in which numerous persons have been illegally detained and secretly flown to third countries, where they have suffered additional human rights abuses including torture and enforced disappearance. No one knows the exact number of persons affected, due to the secrecy under which the operations are carried out.

Green Party Senate Candidate Chris Lugo Urges Inclusion in Senate Debates...

I agree with this press release and believe that these debates should be opened up to the third party candidates. --Space Ninja

Nashville, TN: Green Party of Tennessee candidate for US Senate Chris Lugo is urging the League of Women Voters and other organizations sponsoring debates in Tennessee to open up the debates to all candidates on the ballot,"This is a democracy and the only way the voters can know who they are voting for is if they have a chance to see them and hear them. It is of vital importance in this important statewide election that the media not exclude candidates and thereby hand the elections over to the campaigns with the most money."

The League of Women voters has scheduled a debate between Democrat Harold Ford Jr. and Republican Bob Corker on October 28th in candidate Chris Lugo's home town of Nashville. The Green Party of Tennessee has been fielding candidates for office since 1996. The National Green Party has been in existence for almost three decades and has elected officials in over 250 positions nationally and is running hundreds of candidates this year. In Tennessee, the Green Party is fielding candidates in two Congressional races as well as the Gubenatorial and Senate races.

"The voters deserve a chance to hear from the candidates. This public forum is an opportunity for Vanderbilt University and CBS News as well as the League of Women Voters to live up to the promise of the Constitution of the United States. We cannot have fair elections if the candidates are excluded. "

Unlike Corker or Ford, Green Party of Tennessee Candidate Chris Lugo represents a clear distinction for Tennessee Voters. Chris Lugo supports and immediate withdrawal of armed forces from Iraq and supports other liberal issues which the Democratic Party of Tennessee has abandoned, such as Civil Rights for Gays and Lesbians. Additionally, Lugo has not resorted to immigrant bashing or fear mongering as part of his campaign this season. "I stand fully behind the rights of immigrants. I believe they deserve the dignity and respect that they have earned as persons who have come to this country to work and to live the American dream."

Other issues which the Democrats and Republicans have avoided this campaign season, such as protection of First Amendment Rights and Universal Health Care are part of Lugo's platform. Chris Lugo is the only candidate running for office in the Senate campaign who supports implementing universal health care to address the needs of Tennessee's 600,000 uninsured, including over 300,000 who were kicked off of Tenncare this year.

"I will debate Harold Ford Jr on Meet the Press. I will debate Harold Ford Jr. and Bob Corker in Chattanooga. I will debate them in Nashville. I am ready to show that there is a choice for voters in Tennessee this election season. Americans are tired of the war in Iraq. They want a quick and speedy end to the war. Tennesseans want health care, they want a clean environment, they want a politician who will address the environmental crisis of global warming. Tennesseans want a candidate who will look to the future, and will provide real solutions to the problems we are facing."

NEWTON JAKE FORD ON THE RADIO!

Young Newton Jake Ford appeared on the Jennings Bernard Show yesterday to answer questions and discuss his campaign. This is Jake's 1st in-depth media appearance. With early voting about a month away, Jake will need to increase his visibility substantially if he wants to have any chance whatsoever to win on November 7. I hear that Young Jake sounds the part and certain people have told me that he reminds them of Harold, Sr. I would expect no less from Young Jake considering that both his father and brother Harold Ford, Jr. held the office. Even with Jake's lack of credentials, I would have expected him to pick up some of their styles and mannerisms through osmosis.

The River City Mud Bugle has full details on Newton Jake's appearance including downloadable MP3s. You can listen to Newton Jake here:

MILITARY SERVICE RECORDS -- WHO SERVED IN THE MILITARY AND WHO SENDS OTHERS TO FIGHT

Although military service is not required for public office (perhaps it should be), it is always interesting to see that the biggest warhawks are usually some of the biggest chickenhawks. Check out this list from The Real Fair & Balanced News page:

HAROLD FORD JR. ENDORSES INDEPENDENT CANDIDATE JAKE FORD?

I recently read a post over at the FREEDONIAN about Congressman Ford's "endorsement" of his brother Jake Ford including the use of Congressman Ford's campaign volunteers and headquarters.

Here are the relevant portions of this interesting post:

The College Democrats met with Harold Ford Jr. at his HQ today. After he spoke to them, he let his a**head little brother speak to the volunteers that showed up.

A**head is apparently running his campaign out of Harold's HQ (Something to ponder before sending Harold a check) and using his volunteer base as well.

The College Democrats did the right thing (Although perhaps not my favorite thing, which would have consisted of kicking both brothers in the nuts and dumping garbage cans on them as they lay on the ground) and made it clear that they are there to work for Jr. and ONLY Jr.

If this is indeed true, then Congressman Ford needs to get off of the fence. Congressman Ford should openly and publicly endorse Newton Jake for the Congress seat instead of Steve Cohen. While I believe that 99% of the people in this world are more qualified for Congress than Shakey Jake, Congressman Ford is in a difficult position no matter what. But is it reasonable to expect a man (Congressman Ford) to support a former opponent candidate over his brother?

Based on his actions, it appears to me that Congressman Ford is supporting his brother's campaign which is understandable. However, Congressman Ford needs to communicate this endorsement to the public, so people will not think he is walking down the middle. That way people will know whether Congressman Ford is more concerned about making the Democratic Party stronger or making his immediate branch of the Ford family stronger.

As Mr. Miyagi once told me when I was a teenager living in Reseda, California during my first foray into the martial arts,

"Man walk on road. Walk left side, safe. Walk right side, safe. Walk down middle, sooner or later, get squished just like grape."

Same here. Either HFJ supports Jake, or HFJ supports Cohen. If HFJ plays it safe and publicly endorses no one, HFJ will get squished just like grape. Understand?

R.I.P. - Mr. Miyagi!

DO YOU STILL BELIEVE THAT ELECTRONIC VOTING IS SECURE?

The Center of Information Technology Policy Department at Princeton recently conducted a study on the Diebold AccuVote-TS and its newer relative the AccuVote-TSx electronic voting machines.

The Department analyzed the machine's hardware and software, performed experiments on it, and considered whether real election practices would leave it suitably secure. It was found that the machine is vulnerable to a number of extremely serious attacks that undermine the accuracy and credibility of the vote counts it produces. The full study can be reviewed at:

http://itpolicy.princeton.edu/voting/ts-paper.pdf

The main findings of the study were:

(1) Malicious software running on a single voting machine can steal votes with little if any risk of detection. The malicious software can modify all of the records, audit logs, and counters kept by the voting machine, so that even careful forensic examination of these records will find nothing amiss. The Department constructed demonstration software that carries out this vote-stealing attack.

(2) Anyone who has physical access to a voting machine, or to a memory card that will later be inserted into a machine, can install said malicious software using a simple method that takes as little as one minute. In practice, poll workers and others often have unsupervised access to the machines.

(3) AccuVote-TS machines are susceptible to voting-machine viruses — computer viruses that can spread malicious software automatically and invisibly from machine to machine during normal pre- and post-election activity. The Department constructed a demonstration virus that spreads in this way, installing its demonstration vote-stealing program on every machine it infects.

(4) While some of these problems can be eliminated by improving Diebold's software, others cannot be remedied without replacing the machines' hardware. Changes to election procedures would also be required to ensure security.

PRESIDENT BUSH & BOB CORKER ARE COMING TO MEMPHIS TO RAISE $$$$$$$$

PRESIDENT BUSH IS NOT SUPPORTING HIS FRIEND FORDYPresident Bush returns to Memphis later this month to help Bob Corker raise monies at a September 27 luncheon hosted by Pitt Hyde. Pres. Bush hung out at Graceland with the Japanese Prime Minister the last time he was in Memphis earlier this summer.

I also heard that Congressman Harold Ford, Jr. (and Corker's November opponent in the race for U.S. Senate) was a part of that Elvis entourage. Since they are allegedly friends, I wonder if Bush and "Fordy" will be hanging out after the luncheon on the 27th.

You can read the full story about the Bush/Corker visit at the COMMERCIAL APPEAL

HAROLD FORD JR'S SPECIAL FUNDING REQUESTS (2006)

Harold Ford, Jr. wants to make history on November 7th I have heard people criticize Congressman Ford over the last few months. I must admit that I have been one of those critics, because I feel that he could be doing so much more for the community with his talents and the position that he has been given. Yet throughout it all, I only hear the negatives and rarely hear many positives except that Congressman Ford is a great speaker. Since I strive to keep it neutral on this site for the most part, this article from May caught my attention recently.

I have not conducted the research to see if he was able to secure funding for these projects, but on their face, these projects appear to be beneficial to the community.

Some examples of these projects include:

Transportation/Treasury/Housing and Urban Development
  • LeMoyne—Owen College/ SoulsvilleUSA Community Development, $1.5 million — To build affordable homes in central Memphis to address the growing demand from professionals moving to areas bordering higher education institutions.
  • Memphis Airport Intermodal Facility, $3 million — To improve mass transit and parking at the Memphis Airport.

You can review the entire list of Congressman Ford's special funding requests at:

2PAC TRIBUTE (10TH ANNIVERSARY OF HIS DEATH)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

It is hard to believe that it has been 10 years since the Friday the 13th death (or assassination as some allege) of Tupac Shakur a/k/a 2Pac in Las Vegas, NV. While 2Pac had his detractors, no one can deny his effect on the hip-hop and rap industries. I believe that 2Pac would have been a great political activist had he not been killed. I do not condone the crimes and negativity that 2Pac was associated with during his life, but he had a good message that resonated with the youth. He also was able to excite young people of all ages, races, and economic status to buy millions of his records both in life and in death. R.I.P 2Pac. The hip-hop world misses you.

Here is a good tribute to Pac from Black Ice at SOHH.com that cites some of Pac's social and political beliefs: 2Pac TRIBUTE

GOP Senate Hopeful Gets Unwanted October Surprise?

REPUBLICAN NOMINEE BOB CORKER
By Justin Rood - September 11, 2006, 12:07 PM

In Tennessee, a new development in a three-year-old lawsuit may force new revelations out of the state's GOP Senate candidate, just weeks before the November election.

A judge today required Republican Senate candidate Bob Corker to testify and provide documents in response to a subpoena from a group of environmental activists with Democratic ties, who have filed suit over the former Chattanooga mayor's involvement in a questionable land development deal. Typically, such documents and testimony are public.

The judge ordered the information shared on Oct. 20 -- just three weeks before Tennessee voters are to decide whether he or Democrat Harold Ford Jr. will represent them in Congress. The two candidates are in a statistical dead heat, according to a new Wall Street Journal/Zogby poll.

The flap: Corker, a millionaire developer with a yen for public office, had a hand in two sides of a three-way deal to develop a Wal-Mart "supercenter" in the town of Chattanooga. His company sold land to the developers of the site -- and as mayor, his city administration allowed environmental concerns to be pushed aside in favor of the development.

Corker has tried -- and failed -- to get the case dismissed. His lawyers convinced a judge to seal certain records in the case which pertain to trade secrets or confidential financial information.

About three weeks ago, the plaintiffs subpoenaed Corker to testify and provide documents. His lawyers tried to quash the subpoena, but today a judge in Hamilton County, Tenn. refused the request.

Corker's lawyers had argued that he should be excused from testifying because he was running for office. The plaintiff's subpoena, they said, was both "unreasonable" and "oppressive."
