42 Tons of Poison to be Dumped by Air on Pristine Australian Lord Howe Island to Kill All Black Rats

Unofficial flag of Lord Howe Island

They say that this Lord Howe Island is idyllic and it is even listed as a World Heritage site. The official Lord Howe Island page had this to say:

Lord Howe Island — widely regarded as the most beautiful island in the Pacific — is the closest island getaway to Sydney, and a part of New South Wales. It’s less than two hours flying from either Sydney or Brisbane off Australia's east coast. It is one of just four island groups to be inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage list for the global significance of its natural beauty and heritage.

Well, this beautiful island is about get blitzed with 42 TONS of poisoned bait to kill off the non-native black rats that were accidentally introduced to the island back in 1918. Don't these scientists realize that once they dump 42 tons of poison on the pristine island, it will NEVER be the same.

Stephen Wills, chief executive of the Lord Howe Board, which administers the island as part of New South Wales, agrees that the plan – which involves dropping nearly 42 tons of poison-laced bait from helicopters – is radical. But there is no other option, he believes. "This is one of the most beautiful places in the world, which is why it warrants such a significant and detailed programme," he says.

A crescent-shaped island with a lagoon and coral reef, Lord Howe is said to be washed by the cleanest ocean on the planet. Two-thirds of it is a protected reserve, while its surrounding waters are a marine park. The World Heritage listing was granted in 1982 because of its outstanding natural beauty and exceptional biodiversity.
